About Museum

  • India, with a 7,520-km long coastline, is also home to one of the world’s oldest known civilizations — the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC).
  • Over the past 100 years, excavations have revealed many traces of the thriving Indus Valley Civilization. Among its many sites, Lothal in Gujarat stands out, where the world’s earliest known man-made dockyard was discovered in 1957.
  • Archaeological evidence confirms that the Harappan civilization maintained maritime trade and cultural connections extending far beyond the Indian coastline.
  • This tradition of maritime connections has continued ever since, flourishing along both the west and east coasts.
  • Connections stretching from Mesopotamia and Egypt in the West to Japan in the Far East have been discovered.
  • Simply put, India’s connection with the sea dates back over 4,500 years.
  • Guided by the vision of our Honorable Prime Minister, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is developing the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Lothal, Gujarat to showcase India’s rich maritime heritage.
